For years, outdoor fabrics, also known as performance fabrics, have been engineered to provide improved durability, to withstand moisture and mildew, and to prevent fading from exposure to sunlight. And over the years, these fabrics, many considered primarily for outdoor use, have slowly made their way indoors. After all, their unique qualities are a perfect fit for active households–a great option for those of you with children and pets.
KDR Designer Showrooms has recently published a series of blog posts dedicated to Designing for Families. In these posts, experienced designers shared their go-to tips and tricks for creating spaces that can endure heavy use without sacrificing style. In more than one instance, the use of these performance fabrics was met with praise.
See below for examples of performance, or indoor/outdoor fabrics, available through KDR.

No longer are indoor/outdoor designs comprised of only bold printed options, today’s performance fabrics include woven designs, even velvets, in a broad range of colors. The Performance Collection from Cowtan & Tout, which can seen below, illustrates this marriage of form and function.

As a testament to their versatility, well-known outdoor fabric manufacturer Sunbrella recently hosted an event where top New York designers were tasked with creating indoor spaces using solely outdoor fabrics. Designers and guests alike found themselves impressed and surprised with the range of textures and colors as well as the level of sophistication that could be achieved with these hard-wearing fabrics. The Editor at Large captured the event in a short video that can be seen below.
